Dan Holloway

Biography & Service History

Dan Holloway began his political career in the mid-1990’s when the local school district tried to close his children’s high school. Dan and his wife Hilda successfully organized the community and convinced the School Board to keep Workman High School open. He received the prestigious Golden Apple Award for his Outstanding School Service. A member of the American Legion, he designed La Puente’s Veterans Memorial at City Hall which was dedicated in January, 1997. His first political experience at City Hall was when he joined a group of friends who went to La Puente City Hall to support a friend who owned the local bowling alley that was being put out of business by rumors of redevelopment. Looking for a way to make his City a better place to live, he applied for every commission and committee the City operated, but to no avail. Taking a different approach, he began writing a weekly Highlander Newspaper community news column, “The La Puente Lookout”, in 1997. In 1998 he was appointed to the City’s Puente Pride Committee and in 2001, after years of trying, was finally appointed to the La Puente Planning Commission. There he served for six years including two terms as Chairman.

Dan Holloway ran for City Council in 1999, losing his bid by less than 50 votes. After retiring from his career as an Aerospace Manager at Raytheon, he ran again in 2007 winning a Council seat as the top vote getter in a field of nine that included three incumbents. His election meant the end of his newspaper column and service on the Puente Pride Committee and as a Planning Commissioner. Sworn in as a Councilman on Dec. 11, 2007 by his wife, he served as La Puente’s Mayor Pro Tem for two years before becoming Mayor. Re-elected again in 2012 and 2016 as the top vote getter, he has served as Mayor twice and as Mayor Pro Tem and also represents the City on several regional Boards and Commissions. He has worked closely with the three School Districts serving La Puente and has been a mainstay of the L.E.A.D. (Life Experiences About Democracy) Program at four local schools.

Dan Holloway was born in Hollywood, CA in 1947. His parents, Dan and Marion, eventually moved to West Los Angeles when he was five years old. An only child, Dan excelled at sports and was a Little League all-star, Jr. High Athlete of the Year and played baseball and basketball at Hamilton High School. After graduation he enlisted in the Navy where he would serve aboard nuclear powered Polaris Missile Submarines as a Launch Control Supervisor. He was named one of Senator Ed Hernandez’s Veterans of the year in 2015.

Having known his future wife Hilda since moving to West LA when she was two years old, they dated prior to his going into the Navy and married two years later in 1969. They lived in Honolulu, Hawaii for the last two years of Dan’s enlistment before returning home to California. Dan attended Santa Monica College (SMC), Cal State Northridge (CSUN) and Los Angeles City College (LACC) earning his Associate of Arts Degree at SMC and a National Certification from the Academy of Ophthalmic Optics as a Certified Optician. During that time Kimberly Anne, the first of the Holloway’s four children, was born in 1974. (1974 -2002) Two years later Jennifer Lynn arrived in 1976. Starting his career at Hughes Aircraft Co. (later Raytheon) just a week after Jennifer’s birth, he would work at the El Segundo aerospace facility in Production and Inventory Control for the next 30 years, retiring in 2006. Having a growing family, Dan & Hilda moved to South Redondo Beach where their son Christopher Ryan was born in 1979 and daughter Shannon Marie was born in 1982. Renting a small house they longed for a place of their own, so in 1983 the Holloway family moved east, buying a home in La Puente. With a young family, Dan would turn his attentions to youth sports where he coached all his children and served as a Little League and AYSO Board Member, referee/umpire and sponsor.

Dan Holloway has proudly provided a lifetime of service to his family, his community and his nation.
